Illumion, a Cambridge University spinout, is revolutionising research into new battery materials by accelerating the process by over 10x and slashing costs by 100x compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Its desktop device, the IllumionONE, achieves this using patented charge photometry technology, a breakthrough developed over five years of research at Cambridge University. By analysing how battery particles scatter light during charging and discharging, the device provides critical insights to unlock faster charging, higher energy density and longer lifespan.

With £284k in orders and a £3.6m qualified sales pipeline, Illumion is primed for significant growth.

Management are raising £2.5m in Seed funding, £2.1m of which has already been invested. The round is backed by leading UK venture investors, including Foresight, Cambridge Enterprise Ventures (the University’s venture arm), and Refeyn, an Oxford-based life sciences microscopy pioneer, as well as several Cambridge Angels.

Christoph completed a MChem at Oxford in 2012 followed by a DPhil in Physical Chemistry in 2016. He then spent 18 months at Harvard as a Postdoc followed by four years at Cambridge University as a Research Fellow.
